Theme of the Sunday: Two Widows Who Gave Everything. In the first reading and the gospel today, God asks that all we have must be shared with those in need. The only sacrifice that pleases God says the second reading — is a heart ready to love a heart (i.e. Christ) that shares its very life.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The widow made a little cake from her meal and brought it to Elijah.
A reading from the first Book of Kings (1 Kings 17:10-16)
In those days: Elijah [the prophet] arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks; and he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.” And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” And she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a pitcher; and now, I am gathering a couple of sticks, that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” And Elijah said to her, “Fear not; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and after ward make for yourself and your son. For thus says the LORD the God of Israel, ‘The Jar of meal shall not be spent, and the pitcher of oil shall not fail, until the day that the LORD sends rain upon the earth.’” And she went and did as Elijah said; and she, and he, and her household ate for many days. The jar of meal was not spent, neither did the pitcher of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD which he spoke by Elijah.

“Christ offered himself once to bear the sins of many.”
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews (Hebrews 9:24-28)
Christ has entered, not into a sanctuary made with hands, a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as he high priest enters the Holy place yearly with blood not his own; for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgement, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

The Creed (I Believe)
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. PRIEST: Jesus Christ offered his life for our sake, and this should be the measure of our generosity to God. Let us ask the Lord, In his generous love for the world, to give to everyone all the graces they need.
READER: FOR THE CHURCH, IN HER CARE OF THE POOR, pause that all religious and lay societies who look after the needs of the poor may be blessed with love, courage and patience, to continue the giving of themselves to others. pause Lord, hear us; teach us to be generous we pray Oh Lord.
FOR THOSE IN CHARGE OF SOCIAL SERVICES, pause that they may help the poor and needy, and regard them always as full members of our society, for whom it is their duty and privilege to care. pause Lord, hear us; teach us to be generous we pray Oh Lord.

PRIEST: Father, you have given us more than we deserve, and the answer to these our prayers will be an added reason for praising you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
